History of Gosnold

Originally founded in 1972 as the Cape Cod Alcoholism Intervention and Rehabilitation Unit (CCAIRU), Gosnold, Inc. presently celebrates 50 years of helping youth, adults, families, and communities heal from mental health, substance use, and co-occurring illnesses through a comprehensive range of programs and services.

Gosnold grew exponentially over these five decades to include an extensive array of services designed to meet the pressing needs of our community. Our mission centers on addressing society’s most urgent needs.

With a strong commitment to service, community, and innovation, Gosnold has received local, state, and national acclaim. Our leadership assists behavioral health experts and policymakers to address substance use and mental health disorders using the most cutting-edge, evidence-based approaches. Nationally accredited by The Joint Commission, we understand treatment must be individualized and based on individual and family strengths and preferences.

Milestones & Achievements

1972

  • Cape Cod Alcoholism Intervention and Rehabilitation Unit (CCAIRU) opens in Pocasset. CCAIRU is eventually renamed Gosnold, which later merges with the Thorne Clinic to provide mental health treatment.

1974

  • 1974: Gosnold's outpatient treatment program opens.
  • 1974: Emerson House for women opens and becomes one of the first substance use treatment programs dedicated to the needs of women in the United States.

1979

  • 1979: Stephen Miller House opens as a program designed to treat deaf patients suffering from substance use disorder.

1982

  • 1982: Gosnold Treatment Center opens in Falmouth as a 14-day detoxification and rehabilitation unit.

1984

  • 1984: Miller House transitions to an all-male extended residential treatment program.

1987

  • 1987: Forbes Magazine recognizes Gosnold as one of 12 leading substance use treatment programs in the United States.

1992

  • 1992: Raymond V. Tamasi is named President and CEO of Gosnold.

1993

  • 1993: Emerson House Women and Children’s Program is selected as a nationwide demonstration site for the development of residential treatment for pregnant women and women with young children.

1995

  • 1995: Nationally recognized as a demonstration site for residential treatment of pregnant and post-partum women and their children, Emerson House is featured in a two-part series on ABC Network’s Nightline.

1996

  • 1996: Gosnold merges with the Thorne Clinic to provide mental health services.

2002

  • 2002: Gosnold establishes a drug court treatment program to fill the gap for justice-involved individuals and their families struggling with substance use disorder.

2003

  • 2003: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation’s largest public health philanthropy, selects Gosnold as one of 10 programs in the United States to participate in a national program called Paths to Recovery - a learning collaborative designed to improve access and retention in substance use treatment.

2004

  • 2004: Gosnold at Cataumet opens as a 30-bed inpatient clinical stabilization service (CSS).

2008

  • 2008: The Reaching Out Family Program launches to provide education and support to families affected by addiction.

2010

  • 2010: Integration with physical health care begins between Gosnold and Falmouth Hospital. This pilot project aims to improve medical staff perceptions and treatment outcomes for hospitalized patients with substance use disorder.

2011

  • 2011: Gosnold is named “Mental Health Agency of the Year” by the Massachusetts Mental Health Counselor’s Association.

2012

  • 2012: The Young Adult Opiate Program is established to provide additional services to young people on Cape Cod addicted to opiates.
  • 2012: For its innovative collaboration with Falmouth Hospital, Gosnold is awarded the Behavioral Health Innovation of the Year Award by the Network for the Improvement of Addiction Treatment (NIATx), the Excellence in Clinical Outcomes Award by the Massachusetts Association for Behavioral Health, and the James W. West Quality Improvement Award by the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP).
  • 2012: Gosnold’s outpatient program expands to Centerville.

2013

  • 2013: Gosnold launches the Recovery Coaching Program to guide patients and families through the transition period following inpatient treatment.

2014

  • 2014: Gosnold opens the prevention division to increase awareness and early intervention efforts.
  • 2014: Gosnold receives the James W. West Quality Improvement Award from the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP) for the Young Adult Opiate Program.

2015

  • 2015: Gosnold partners with Cape Cod police departments to establish an overdose intervention program.
  • 2015: In an effort to improve access to psychiatric services for residents of Cape Cod, Gosnold launches a telepsychiatry program funded by the state of Massachusetts.
  • 2015: Gosnold opens its Shore Road sober living facility.
  • 2015: The school-based program develops out of Gosnold’s prevention division, eventually providing services to children and adolescents in over 60 schools both on and off Cape Cod.
  • 2015: Tufts Health Plan grants Gosnold the Quality Innovation Award for the Young Adult Opiate Program.

2016

  • 2016: Richard J. Curcuru is named President and CEO of Gosnold.
  • 2016: Gosnold’s Innovation Center is developed to pilot new modalities in the treatment of substance use disorder. Raymond V. Tamasi is named its president and founder.
  • 2016: Gosnold launches the Partial Hospital Program in Centerville.
  • 2016: Gosnold partners with South Shore Hospital in Weymouth to pilot the emergency department intervention program.

2017

  • Gosnold’s emergency department intervention program expands to include Cape Cod and Falmouth Hospitals.
  • Gosnold partners with Aspire Health Alliance and Family Continuity to form Southeast Community Partners, LLC, a program designed to assist people with complex medical, mental health, addiction, and social needs in finding and obtaining services they need to live healthier lives.
  • Gosnold on Nantucket is established after a merger agreement is signed with Nantucket Hospital.
  • Gosnold at Stoughton opens with expanded services, including a Partial Hospital Program.
  • The first annual Gosnold Legacy Gala is held at the JFK Library and Museum in Boston.

2020

  • In recognition of its high-quality clinical services offered for substance use treatment and recovery, Gosnold is designated as a Blue Distinction Center by Blue Cross Blue Shield.
  • Despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 Pandemic, Gosnold seamlessly transitions all of its outpatient services to a telehealth platform to continue to serve its patients throughout Massachusetts.

2021

  • Emerson and Miller Houses are converted into clinical stabilization service (CSS) facilities to better meet the needs of the community.
  • Gosnold Treatment Center receives its opiate treatment program accreditation from The Joint Commission.
  • Gosnold Treatment Center begins the treatment of pregnant women in their detox program.

2022

  • Gosnold receives the behavioral health justice involved (BHJI) contract to help those connected to the judicial system access behavioral health services and social supports in the community.
  • Gosnold Treatment Center expands from 35 to 45 treatment beds and creates a new wing with single rooms and enhanced amenities.
