Inpatient and Residential
Recovery is a lifelong process and the journey begins
at different stages, depending on the severity of the
illness. The Gosnold philosophy is based on treating addiction
as a chronic disease; promoting recovery as total abstinence
and advocating patient involvement in twelve step programs
for sustaining long term recovery. These treatment principles
are reinforced in all of our programs.
Gosnold offers a full range of clinical services, from
acute medical detoxification to outpatient care.
The program options include:
- Primary Care (Medical Detoxification and Stabilization)
- Inpatient Rehabilitation
- Transitional Care
- Residential Treatment
- Day and Evening Treatment
- Outpatient Treatment
GOSNOLD TREATMENT CENTER
Primary Care and Medical Detoxification
and Stabilization

The Gosnold Treatment Center, located adjacent to Falmouth
Hospital, is a 50-bed facility which includes semi-private
bedrooms, lounges, a dining area, group therapy rooms
and counseling offices.
The Detoxification program is staffed by physicians, nurses,
counselors and recovery aides who provide medical and
counseling care to patients undergoing withdrawal treatment.
Treatment begins with a medical assessment and evaluation.
A variety of medications are used to reduce the discomfort
of withdrawal. We administer Buprenorphine (Suboxone)
for opiate withdrawal treatment. Gosnold does not use
methadone.
The detoxification period stay varies, depending on patient
needs, and the medical and counseling staff meets regularly
to review progress. Patients attend educational sessions,
individual and group counseling and 12 step groups. Counselors
help patients to understand their disease, its symptoms
and progression, and treatment options available in continuing
care. Length of stay varies, but generally lasts from
one to two weeks.

GOSNOLD at CATAUMET
Inpatient Rehabilitation Treatment
Gosnold at Cataumet offers rehabilitation (four to
six weeks) for adult men and women who require a longer,
treatment stay. The thirty-bed program is located in
Cataumet, about nine miles from Falmouth. It overlooks
a natural wooded area that surrounds a large cranberry
bog. It includes private and semi-private accommodations,
counseling and group treatment rooms, lounges, a dining
room and outdoor sitting areas.
Using the "Building Recovery" treatment model,
staff assists patients to identify recovery obstacles
and develop the skills necessary to sustain recovery.
The program includes daily group counseling, addiction
education, twelve step meetings, peer interaction. special
issues groups, fitness programs, meditation and reflection
times, and "Building Recovery" sessions. The
treatment team includes addiction therapists, nurses,
fitness coordinator, physicians, psychologists and psychiatrists.
Patients participate in their recovery program in interactive
group sessions and group learning activities where they
identify and practice recovery skills that can help
them deal with the ups and downs of early recovery.
Daily groups emphasizes choice, action, and problem
solving to better prepare people for the work of converting
an active addiction into a rewarding abstinence based
life.
A family education program is offered for concerned
family members and loved ones to help them learn addiction
and the role they have in recovery. It also introduces
family members to programs such as Ala-non and the services
offered to families in Gosnold's
outpatient program.
THE MILLER HOUSE
Residential Treatment for Men
The Miller House is a 33-bed residential program housed
in a Victorian manor in Falmouth. The facility includes
counseling offices, bedrooms, a dining area, a large
living room, and a wrap-around porch that overlooks
picturesque Nantucket Sound.
The Miller House is recommended for men
who require long term residential care. Individual counseling,
group therapy, recovery management strategies, addiction
education, and self-help groups all contribute to progress
in recovery. Men develop the sobriety skills, self-awareness,
and lifestyle changes necessary for healthy living.
While individual needs dictate the length of treatment,
the average stay is between 60 and 90 days.

THE EMERSON HOUSE
Residential Treatment for Adult and Adolescent Women
and the Pregnant Women and Children's Infant's Program
Located in historic West Falmouth, Emerson House meets
the unique needs of women. The large Victorian mansion
is less than a mile from the beach. Adult and adolescents
share one building, while pregnant women and mothers
with infants reside in private rooms in an adjacent
building. The length of stay is individually determined,
with an average stay of 60-90 days for adults; 60 to
120 days for adolescents; and six months to one year
for pregnant or post-partum women.
Adult Program
Program staff work with women to identify issues that
block sustained abstinence. The longer length of stay
offers a rich opportunity to reorient life to recovery.
Individual counseling complements group therapy, educational
sessions, AA and NA. The program uses a variety of specialized
resources designed to develop recovery skills, including
special issues groups, a cultural enrichment program,
fitness and meditation sessions recreational and arts
and crafts activities.
Adolescent Program
Recognizing the challenges young women face in sustaining
recovery, smaller groups work on mastering the skills
necessary to build a workable identity in a 'clean and
sober' life. Academic tutoring is available on site
and coordinated with referring school systems. Young
women benefit from interactions with adults as well
as, from separate educational, recovery, and individual
counseling sessions.
Program for Pregnant and Postpartum Women &
Infants
Emerson House coordinates prenatal, delivery and well
baby services with area physicians. Supporting the mother
and infant in creating a healthy beginning through access
to care, early intervention, parenting support and education,
increases the chance of long term success. Practicing
the multiple tasks of motherhood while maintaining recovery
is one of the many goals of this program.
GOSNOLD TSS PROGRAM
Transitional Support Services
The Gosnold TSS Program, located in Cataumet, houses
twenty-seven residents in nine semi-private rooms and
three, three-bed rooms. The Program provides support
for persons who have completed detoxification treatment
and require additional care before admission to a longer-term
residential program, a sober living facility, or returning
home. Case managers help residents identify the important
recovery issues and identify community based helping
resources. Residents participate in peer group sessions,
case management sessions, 12-step meetings (NA and AA)
and addiction education sessions. The average length
of stay is 2 to 4 weeks.
DUAL DIAGNOSIS
Upon entering treatment, many individuals exhibit symptoms
of depression, anxiety and other types of emotional
disorders. For some, these disorders are a result of
years of drug and alcohol abuse and the symptoms will
clear over time. Others used drugs and alcohol to cope
with an underlying psychiatric illness that may have
come before their drug or alcohol use. In most cases,
these disorders are well managed through the use of
medications and supportive therapy. If an underlying
psychiatric disorder requires more intensive, specialized
treatment in a psychiatric facility, Gosnold will assist
in arranging the transfer.
CONTINUING CARE - RECOVERY MANAGEMENT
Inpatient and residential treatment mark the beginning
of recovery. Patients in the inpatient and residential
programs are encouraged to continue treatment in outpatient
programs, participation in AA/NA or other Twelve Step
Programs; and other supportive services. Prior to discharge,
counselors work with patients to develop a continuing
care plan and assist with referral arrangements.
